I think maybe the second most-common myth I’ve heard about pregnancy (#1 being the crazy cravings preggo ladies tend to experience) is about that glow. The flush of all that extra blood helping your skin glisten and radiate like the otherworldly, life creating superlady that you are.
I am still waiting on my glow to show up. Some ladies get to look supercharged; I got cankles and cranky skin.
I’ve always had super dry skin: every time I’ve gone in for a facial, the aesthetician has marveled at how much product my skin soaks up. (Sometimes I think they’re tempted to charge me a supplement for my thirsty skin, but so far I’ve dodged that add-on).
Even in humid Austin, I still need really effective moisturizers to keep things from getting dry and flaky. I’ve cycled through many a product, always looking for one that is supercharged enough to make my skin feel soft and hydrated, but not so heavy that I feel like I’m suffocating my pores.
Add pregnancy hormones on top of that and it’s been even harder to find a balance. Between the puffiness, dark circles, redness, and a host of lovely breakouts on my chin (thanks, Moonshine!), my skin has had a rough couple of months. Despite (or because of?) all these skin woes, I am trying to avoid anything with really harsh chemicals in it, but also don’t want to let it all go downhill just yet.
Block Island Organics offered to let me try their new night cream, and since I lived in their sunscreen this last summer, I jumped at the chance. I was hopeful, knowing how well I liked their natural sunscreen, but also resisted getting my hopes up, since, well, natural products can be hit or miss. Also my skin is 10 kinds of funky these days.
I’m happy to report it’s totally working for me. Just like the sunscreen, it goes on nice and light and smooth, and gives that immediate rush of soothing hydration, instantly banishing that tight I-just-washed-my-face feeling.
Even though it’s a night cream, I’ve been using it morning and night, and within about a week of consistent use my skin did seem to calm down, at least on the dryness front, and act a little less out of sorts than before.
Besides the results (duh!), my favorite things are:
- It’s organic. I try to buy organic whenever possible and it’s so rare to find good skincare products that are organic AND meet your needs.
- Loads of Vitamin C and E. Hey, I’m taking all sorts of prenatals, and I like the idea I’m getting extra nutrition from the inside and the outside!
- It’s carry-on friendly. I’ve been doing a ton of traveling, and I love that I don’t need a separate travel size to take with me. Nothing like not having to use hotel lotion on your face when your skin is already in crisis!

My only complaint is that it hasn’t fixed my breakouts … but I guess that wasn’t the point, was it? 😉
